Constructed with a level of attention to detail that was unusual even at that time, this outstanding historical residential compound features specially designed, custom-made fittings throughout. Over time, however, many of them were destroyed or replaced with inexpensive modern alternatives. Our focus therefore was to restore the historic character of the building.
During the refurbishment, historic components were faithfully reproduced as far as possible. For example, a preservation expert ascertained the original colors of the walls and staircases, and the original tiles were replicated. Other components, which could no longer be reconstructed on the basis of what was available, were specially designed in the spirit of the apartment block after extensive research into other buildings of the era.
This unusual, sophisticated residential complex is arranged around a parklike courtyard based on a concept developed in the early twentieth century by the Norwegian landscape painter Adelsteen Normann. Normann lived and worked in Berlin, and commissioned the Berlin architect Hermann Bentzen to design and build the compound.
With the original garden no longer intact, the expansive courtyard was entrusted to a Berlin landscape architect. After decades of neglect, it is now a secret haven of Jugendstil spirit.
